Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) Program
Background: Established in 1992 the National University, Bangladesh is mainly an autonomous affiliating University. It is located in a place 30 kilometers away from Dhaka’s capital city. The University has 2154 affiliated colleges & institutions and offers various academic programs for graduate and post-graduate degrees. In terms of the enrolment of students, it is one of the largest universities in the world. It has a total enrolment of 2 million students.
Academic Programs: The National University conducts graduate and post-graduate academic programs, such as the Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) Program, M. Phil., and Ph. D. in its central campus at Gazipur. The University has five Academic Committees (Arts, Social Sciences, Natural Science, Life and Earth Sciences, and Business Studies) consisting of academic disciplines. Since 2006 the University offers a two-year M.Phil. and threeyear Ph. D. program in Bangla, English, History, Islamic History and Culture, Arabic, Islamic Studies, and Sanskrit (Academic Committee-Arts); Sociology, Economics, Political Science, Information Science & Library Management, Social Work, Anthropology, and Home Economics (Academic Committee-Social Sciences); Physics, Chemistry, Statistics, Mathematics, and Computer Science (Academic Committee-Science); Zoology, Psychology,
Botany, Soil Science, Geography (Academic Committee-Life and Earth Science); Accounting, Management, Marketing, Finance (Academic Committee-Business Studies).
Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) Program
The University starts a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) program from the academic year 2014-2015. It offers the opportunity to pursue research supported by expert supervision besides course works. The specialty of this program is to carry on research for a thesis to be written in a period of one year. Graduates will get the scope of gaining real-life knowledge through this program and thus they will prove worthy enough to the benefit of the nation and the society. A major portion of total number of seats in each discipline would remain reserved for college teachers. It will provide for them a rare opportunity in particular to research on an area of academic interest in some details.
Duration of the Program
Beginning from July, the duration of the program is one year and a half. In turns, all enlisted disciplines of the University will be included in the program.
Goal
The Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) program aims to provide a comprehensive training in a particular discipline by providing class room teaching alongside original research works. The goal of the program is to provide an excellent Thesis-based Learning/Education with focus on professional development among college teachers in particular in order to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary for imparting quality education to students.
Semesters
The program consists of three semesters of equal duration. The duration of each semester is 20 working weeks of classroom teaching and an additional week for exam preparation. Publishing of semester final results will take a very short time and the next semester classes will be commenced immediately after.
Program Format
One year and six month Master Program worth a total of 42 credits for degrees in Arts, Social Sciences, Sciences and 50 credits for MAS in Business Administration.
Admission
Students having Bachelor (Honors) degree on any relevant discipline can apply. However, college teachers, who are believed to be key actors in changing country’s educational system from a traditional to an innovative and modern one, are highly encouraged to apply. Around 20 students (80% amongst affiliated college teachers & 20% from students having at least a Bachelor (Honors) degree in each discipline have the chance of getting enrolment.
